Extensive Medical Design Experience
Holland Basham Architects has extensive
experience working within the hospital setting. For example, we have provided design services on
numerous projects for Alegent Health, Creighton Universityl, Creighton University Medical Center, McKennan
Medical Center located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and the University
of Nebraska Medical Center. We have also provided design consultation on a national basis
for Bone Marrow Transplant Units at six academic medical centers.
This gives our staff a well rounded expertise in designing spaces for acute
care and for primary care.
The Challenge of Health Care Design
Our project teams’ experience over
the last 15 years has given us great insight into how the rapid changes
in the health care industry have resulted in significant changes in project
delivery for health care design.
Team Continuity
An outstanding project team is made
up of many unique entities, all bringing knowledge and experience in specialized
areas. As a project team works together on a continuum of projects,
a special rapport is established which results in a more efficient and
satisfactory communication environment.
The project management team should begin with Owner representatives from the owner from both the facility management side as well as the operational/staffing side. A purchasing agent is also necessary to assist in the selection and determination of complex medical equipment since much of a facility design can be driven by those requirements. A successful team also consists of the project architect, the electrical, mechanical, and for a new building, civil and structural engineers. Another team member should be the proposed general contractor. These individuals will need to work hand in hand with other team members in order to set realistic project budgets and schedules and then work within those limits.
Partnering and Cost Controls
Cost control in medical care is
more important today than ever. Because of the economy in
the last few years, budgeting and costing has become more difficult and
unpredictable than ever before. For this reason, partnering has
become a rapidly growing method of project management for owners, architects,
and contractors. Partnering involves bringing a contractor on board
during the early design phases to address budget matters so that owners
can make intelligent decisions on how their dollars are spent during the
design phase. This greatly increases the value of a project to the
owner and provides a positive alternative to budget slashing when bids
are received. Bringing contractors onto the project team early not only
provides cost control, but also fosters a team spirit in which all team
members are looking out for the owner’s best interest. It also increases
the breadth of experience available to the team in scheduling, phasing,
and construction planning in a health care setting.
